Owning the narratives that matter most: Data sovereignty with Civo

Civo is a cloud native service provider focused on the developer community. It offers Kubernetes clusters, GPU compute, and supporting services designed to simplify infrastructure management. Civo champions sovereign cloud solutions which help organisations retain control over their data and infrastructure within local jurisdictions.

The Challenge

In July 2025, Microsoft publicly admitted that it could not guarantee data sovereignty to customers in France, and by implication, the wider European Union, if the Trump administration demanded access to customer information held on its servers. 

For Civo, a vocal advocate for data sovereignty, this breaking news represented a fantastic opportunity to position itself at the heart of the debate and emphasise the importance of sovereignty. To support this goal, Resonance needed to act swiftly to help Civo to respond to the news at speed, with authority, and in a way that tied into Civo’s ongoing sovereignty research campaign, which Resonance had executed for Civo.

Execution

Resonance acted with speed, deploying a two-pronged strategy that combined rapid response PR with longer-term thought leadership positioning:

  1. Real-time Commentary
    Within hours of the Microsoft announcement, Resonance drafted and placed expert commentary from Civo’s leadership in tier-one outlets. The messaging underlined the critical importance of sovereign cloud solutions during times of geopolitical uncertainty and industry consolidation.

  2. Thought Leadership Alignment
    This breaking-news response was strategically integrated with Civo’s sovereignty research campaign. Resonance had authored a detailed whitepaper on the topic, providing data and insight to deepen media interest and sustain coverage beyond the initial story.

  3. High-Impact Media Engagement
    By targeting top-tier tech, business, and national press, Resonance amplified Civo’s voice in the sovereignty conversation, ensuring it was leading the narrative and heard alongside major industry players.

Results

Thanks to Resonance’s collaborative approach, Civo’s sovereignty research campaign delivered both immediate visibility and long-term brand positioning:

  • 8 pieces of tier-one coverage through reactive commentary, including a Letter to the Editor in the Financial Times and a feature in Forbes.

  • 28 pieces of coverage in total for Civo’s sovereignty research across three press releases, including articles in leading tech titles such as The Register, Computer Weekly, TechRadar Pro, IT Pro, and more.
  • By the end of July, Civo ranked second only to SAP on Gemini search brand rankings for data sovereignty - outranking larger enterprises such as RackSpace.
