The brief

The client provides supply chain risk software. Its buyers are operations and procurement leaders who read a small number of trade titles closely, and who are far more persuaded by a named executive explaining a real disruption than by any product claim.

Supply chain news arrives constantly and most of it is not worth commenting on. The judgement is which hooks are big enough to carry a point of view, and which are noise.

Toyota plant closures

Pitched at 12:29 to 67 journalists, opened by 37. That afternoon Supply Chain IT published the piece under a client executive's byline, using the pitch's subject line as its headline. Live at 16:32, four hours after the pitch went out.

Supply Chain IT, 7 August. Published as a bylined article.

US tariffs and global trade

Sent to 56 journalists and opened by 29. Three days later Supply Chain Digital, on the pitch list, quoted a second client executive at length in its analysis of the US and Canada trade dispute. 98,000 monthly readers.

Why it worked

Two executives, two different subjects, two trade features in three weeks. Trade journalists are short of expert comment and generous to anyone who provides it quickly and in publishable form. A pitch subject line that becomes the headline is a sign the piece arrived ready to run.
